The History Behind The Goldfield Poker Chips

Along Highway 95 about half-way between Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada is a town called "Goldfield". It was made famous by the Earp brothers, Wyatt and Virgil, following their famous gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone. Wyatt worked as a pit boss at Tex Rickard's famous Northern Saloon & Gambling Casino in Goldfield and Virgil was the deputy sheriff there until his death in 1905.

The last great Goldrush of the 20th century took place in Goldfield between 1905 and 1910. The call of gold and silver had driven people to places like Goldfield, Nevada. These pioneers were willing to take risks. They came to Goldfield with high hopes and the will to win land, silver, gold or money but not only by working.

They were ready to stake everything on one chance - to wager weeks of savings in a single evening of poker. Full house! But what's the other guy got in his hand? Gambling fit in with the wild and disordered life in frontier settlements and became part of the culture of the West.

Goldfield was the largest city in Nevada at that time with a population of over 30,000. It boasted of several gambling saloons including the aforementioned Northern, with a bar so long it took 80 tenders to serve its customers. It was also the home of many brothels and the now "haunted" Goldfield Hotel.

At one time, the Goldfield Hotel was described as the most luxurious hotel between Chicago and San Francisco, with an elevator, crystal chandeliers and an elegant, mahogany-trimmed lobby with black leather upholstery and gilded columns. In August 2003, the hotel was purchased for $360,000. The buyer plans to refurbish it as possibly a casino conversion project and re-open it to the public.

By 1920, Goldfield's heyday embraced both the final days of the western frontier and the beginning of the automobile age, and it's brief but colorful history combined elements of both.

These "Goldfield Casino" poker chips capture the flavor of the Old West but with a more modern look. The Full Color Inlaid Graphics and 11 different denominations will accomodate any poker game at any stakes. Wyatt and Virgil Earp would be proud to sit at a poker table and play poker with these chips.

Welcome your friends to the Goldfield Casino!
